Donald Trump loses the American Election but Refuses to accept Defeat. By Donovan Reynolds Independent Writer.

Image
Last Saturday, from Times Square to Timbuktu, the world celebrated the end of Donald Trump's tumultuous reign as President of the United States of America; the celebrations in the cities across the US looked like the festivities following the dethroning of a South American dictator. There was an overarching feeling of relief as it was felt by his critics that President Trump was leading the US towards a hateful and tyrannical place. His demonization of immigrants, Muslims, Blacks, LGBTQ, and disabled people over his four years of President is well documented and has become a source of embarrassment for many Americans.        In a live broadcast, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris made victory speeches to the nation in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. They both spoke before enthusiastic Democratic Party supporters. The President elect's overarching theme was a call for unity as the outcome of the bruising election h...

Joe Biden: a UK perspective by Ann Smith.

Image
I start with an admission:   my knowledge about the newly elected US President Joe Biden was zero until the Democratic debates began some months ago.   Then, encouraged by my partner Donovan, I became interested in the candidates spouting forth enthusiastically during the summer of 2020, competing for the position of leader of the US Democratic Party. We had our favourites: mine being Pete Buttigieg and Donovan's preference was for Kamilla Harris and Amy Klobuchar.  Throughout those months I profess I had little interest in Joe Biden, like so many non US viewers I disregarded him, judging him predominantly by his age.  Why, I asked, would anyone vote for him: so old, often a little indecisive and occasionally fluffing his speeches.   So now I eat my words . Could Biden be the solution to so many of our woes today?  He is certainly a warm and empathetic character in contrast to the vile, narcissistic Donald Trump.  My visceral response to B...

Surviving Corona Virus: my Jamaican Story, by Donovan Reynolds, Independent writer.

Image
The rapid global spread of the corona virus caught several well-prepared countries off-guard and the social and economic consequences will wreak havoc on the world economy. To date there are 33,000,000 confirmed cases with 1,000,000 deaths and a recovery rate of 24, 660,721.   As the health and human death toll grows, the economic damage is already evident and represents the largest economic shock the world has experienced in decades.  There has been a race among developing countries and large pharmaceutical companies to develop a vaccine to prevent the spread of the virus.   From New York to New Delhi health services have been inundated with patients, stretching hospitals beyond capacity.  The death toll continues to overstretch the economic capacity of communities and families; the body-bags continue to ratchet up from second waves of infection.  For example, the UK cases have tripled since the end of August with a second lockdown imminent.  In Ja...

Delroy Dobney JLP Political Caretaker Aspirant for Southern St Catherine By Donovan Reynolds Independent Writer

Image
Meet Delroy Dobney: he is one of the most enthusiastic, energetic, kind, and fun-loving individuals you will ever encounter. He is a charismatic 55-year-old man who has a history of impressive community service. I have been told that he is eyeing up a political career; if that is so, I can affirm that politics is in for the most exciting of times. Delroy Dobney is from Allman Hill, St Andrew. He is the second of seven children for his parents, Mr.   Ameziah Dobney, landowner and businessman (deceased), and Mrs. Delva Morrisison; a Christian woman who has a background in nursing, career counseling and a community leader in her own right.   While his mother was in the UK, young Dobney grew up in an open house extended family setting, where his uncles, cousins, grandmother, and stepfather shared their communal space and resources with the rest of the community. His early recollection was of many persons gathering at his home to watch television, which very few families ow...

Kier Starmer and the Sun Newspaper by Ann Smith

Image
I may be proven wrong about the newly appointed UK Labour leader, Kier Starmer, and his future battles. These may not be the impact of COVID-19, the incompetent charm of Boris Johnson, or the capricious nature of Labour party members.  He has his enemies in the Sun newspaper, and this might be his struggle.  The UK Sun newspaper is worrying influential, read by the working class but a Conservative controlled read.  A dreadful, gossipy journal that bullies’, politicians, and celebrities in a vicious style.   The Sun was first published in 1964 and was established as a working class read – including salacious gossip, good sports reporting, and topless women on page 3 – probably contributing to its popularity on construction sites.  I recall hearing groups of men discussing the breasts of the daily page 3 model as this was considered acceptable in misogynistic 1970s Britain.  Over time and under different owners. The Sun developed from Labour su...
