Climate change is the global environmental problem humanity will face over the next decade. Global warming due to CO2 emissions — which according to the UN have increased by almost 50% since 1990 — is accelerating climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) which quickens climate change is an odorless gas that is highly important to life on Earth. CO2 is also known as a greenhouse gas; an excessive concentration can disrupt the natural regulation of temperature in the atmosphere and lead to global warming. The concentration of CO2 increased as a result of the Industrial Revolution and exponential growth in manufacturing activities around the world. Deforestation, agriculture, and fossil fuel use are the primary sources of CO2. Co2 is measured by calculating the carbon dioxide equivalent of a quantity of F gas by multiplying the mass of the gas (in tonnes), by the gas' global warming potential (GWP). This article addresses the impact of climate change on Small Island Developing Sta...

Can Science and Technology Avert an Impending Climate Change Disaster ?: Donovan Reynolds -Independent Writer

What we  do   in a  short timespan  will determine the future of humanity for the next 10,000 years. Climate scientists believe that any increase in average global temperatures beyond 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial  levels  w ill lead to dangerous climate change, causing large-scale desertification, crop failure, inundation of coastal cities, mass migration to higher and cooler ground  and  widespread extinctions. This surely is an apocalyptic utopian vision of the future that has to be avoided. I magine a rise in global temperatures that causes weather systems to be unpredictable and inconsistent , t o the extent of- melting ice at the North Pole causing rising sea levels ,  which could put low-lying island nations such as the Maldives, under the sea. We live a cushy life of capitalist consumption today  withi n the shadow of a future disaster of our own making. A n on-line  review of the current climate science has ...

Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos have two things in common: they are both billionaires and they are both philanthropists. However the greedy 21st century capitalist experiment has taught us to be sceptic of billionaire philanthropi sts as wolves dressed up in generous sheep’s clothing.  According to the Billionaire Index the former has a net worth of US102.5 billion dollars and the latter is valued US 137.2 billion. In November 2021 Bloomberg .com reported that Jeff Bezos charitable fund donated US $100 million dollars to 32 recipients from 21 States in the United States; most of the money went to housing charities. Since 1994 Bill and Melinda Gates have become global trend-setters among the billionaire class. During this period they have given a whopping total of US $50 billion in charity through the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. According to the foundation, $912 million of this money is earmarked to fight diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the global south. H...

Who Benefited from the 20 years War in Afghanistan ?

Image
The image on BBC television of des perate Afghans clinging to the side of a US military plane leaving Kabul airport - with at least two apparently falling to their deaths from the undercarriage - was gut-wrenching. It tells a story of the betrayal of American Foreign policy. Subsequently, on August 30 th 2021, all US troops left Afghanistan after twenty years of military involvement. This article argues that fat cat capitalist defense contractors are the main beneficiaries of the US 2.6 trillion dollars spent to fight a war that has been costly and should have been mediated by diplomatic maneuvers. The United States launched the war in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001, Taliban-led terrorist attacks. In an address on September 20, 2001, US President George Bush demanded the Taliban deliver Bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders to the United States or " . . .share in their fate." They refused to concur with these demands. Of course, Bush had to rea...
